DLRL Launched!

After almost a year of work, Deathlord Relorded is finally published! Not only is it free, but for those of you who develop games or are interested in how the sauce is made, the source code is available on GitHub as well (search for Deathlord Relorded).

What is Deathlord Relorded? It's a reskinning/reimagining/upscaling... whatever you want to call it because it's pretty unique (more of this in a moment) of **THE** most difficult RPG ever made, Deathlord. It was originally released in 1987 for the Apple 2 and C64 computers, and was seen as a blatant ripoff of Ultima. But in retrospect, it has many aspects of Wizardry and Bard's Tale, while proposing dungeon layouts that are among the most difficult, unique and creative that have ever been designed.

You find a treasure room after a grueling ordeal? Wait! There's probably a hidden better treasure room closeby. You're stuck in a dead-end in a dungeon? Maybe it is a dead-end after all. Go back up 2 levels and figure out where that illusiory wall is. But fear not, Deathlord Relorded gives you the tools to make this a fun experience for anyone!

Deathlord Relorded takes the original game, runs it under an emulation layer, and displays it in its own 1920x1080 interface. It adds a badly needed inventory management system with a temporary stash, removes the frustrating permadeath, and shows you all the stats you need when you need them. And makes it much prettier. And gives you hacks and map viewing cheats if you feel frustrated and stuck.

It requires Windows 10 and a 1920x1080 or larger screen.

Take a look, and enjoy the ride. It's a huge game with 16 continents, dozens of towns, dungeons and towers. Below is the picture of all enemy types you will encounter as you play. From brigands to snakes, vampires and djinns, it's got it all.

Thank you so much for making this version! It works with my newer laptop with Windows 11. I endured the original on my Apple //e and never finished, but I love the game (I must be masochistic) and now I can potentially complete it. My only question is that I went into Kawahara's lair and he wasn't there, nor was the document. The other evil wizard, in Tokugawa, was also missing. Is there something I might have done to make them disappear?

It looks like the default scenarios a&b are not pristine disks from the masters. It’s my fault entirely. I will need to fix that but I can’t get to it until about a week from now. :(

I released version 1.0.6.1 that should have the pristine images in the correct directory, I hope.

However, in your case, what you should do is reboot the game, press 'C' in the menu for "character options". Then insert the scenario disks (from the menu or "alt >", and tell it to "disperse existing group". Then reassemble the group and play again. Your adventurers will keep all their skills and inventory, and the world should reset.
